Living with Country

First Scientists, Engineers and Innovators

Living with Country is about innovation, survival, and deep knowledge passed down for over 65,000 years. First Nations people were the first scientists, engineers, and inventors, crafting tools and techniques in perfect harmony with the land. Their expertise in toolmaking, hunting, and engineering continues to inspire and teach us today.

Because innovation in harmony with nature matters.

The Tools of Our People

Tracking and Tools: Hunting Goanna with the Nulla-Nulla

We believe in the power of traditional knowledge. The nulla-nulla, a carefully crafted hunting club, was more than just a weapon—it was a tool shaped by understanding the land and the animals that lived on it. This course uncovers the ancient hunting techniques used to track and catch goanna, a vital source of food.

Because mastering the land’s wisdom matters.

The Tools of Our People: Aboriginal Artefacts and Innovations

We believe every tool tells a story. Aboriginal people developed tools not just for survival, but for precision and purpose. This course explores the many types of boomerangs—each designed for hunting, fishing, and even making music—showing the depth of First Nations innovation.

Because cultural engineering matters.

Tracking Tools

Grass Trees and Spears: Nature’s Engineering in Hunting Kangaroos

We believe nature provides everything we need. From the resin of the grass tree to the perfectly balanced spear, Aboriginal people engineered tools with materials provided by the land. This course explores traditional toolmaking, the cultural significance of the kangaroo, and the deep respect for nature embedded in Aboriginal innovation.

Because working with nature matters.

Stone Tools and Stories: Honouring Cultural Heritage

We believe in honouring the past to understand the present. Stone tools were essential to survival, used for cutting, carving, and even storytelling. This course delves into the science behind Aboriginal stone toolmaking, the stories they hold, and their role in shaping First Nations history.

Because preserving cultural knowledge matters.
