Nature’s Calendar

Learning Seasons Through Culture and Country

Nature tells its own stories—if we know how to listen.
Nature’s Calendar is a hands-on early learning experience that invites children to explore the seasons through Aboriginal knowledge and observation of the natural world.

Instead of relying on traditional Western calendars, this course teaches young learners to look at what nature is doing—what animals are telling us, what plants are showing us. Children discover that Country speaks in signs, colours, patterns, and rhythms.

They begin to see that turtles, wattle, and Lilly Pilly are more than just living things—they are messengers of change.

Connecting Children to Country Through Observation

In this course, children learn to look closely at their world.
They watch.
They notice.
They reflect.

Through a blend of cultural storytelling and practical observation, students explore:

  • The seasonal habits of native animals like turtles

  • The blooming of native plants such as Wattle and Lilly Pilly

  • How First Nations people use these signals to understand time and plan activities

  • What it means to live in harmony with nature, not just on top of it

It is not just science. It is a way of seeing. A way of respecting.

Creative Learning That Sticks

Every lesson includes a hands-on element that brings learning to life.

Children complete a turtle shell-inspired craft, giving them a sensory way to reflect on what they have learned. As they create, they recall the patterns, the animals, and the stories shared.

This connection makes the learning memorable—and meaningful.

Why This Course Matters

When children learn through nature, they begin to slow down.
They pay attention.
They become more curious and more connected.

When that learning is grounded in Aboriginal knowledge, they also begin to understand something deeper—that Country is wise, living, and worthy of respect.

This course gives them the tools to observe, the language to describe, and the heart to honour what they see.

Teach children to follow the rhythms of nature—not the pages of a calendar. Nature’s Calendar brings seasonal learning to life through story, culture, and craft.
